Rural People’s Sangam

Our work uplifts marginalized families, protects indigenous rights, and strengthens vulnerable women and children across Tiruvannamalai District.

Founded in 1991, Rural People’s Sangam (RPS) focuses on improving the quality of life of indigenous Irula communities, rural workers, marginalized women, and vulnerable children. Originating as a youth association in 1980, RPS evolved into a people-centred movement advocating for justice, equality, dignity, and environmental protection. Over the decades, we have organized women’s groups, strengthened youth associations, supported land rights, promoted alternative health practices, and expanded education opportunities. Today, RPS implements housing projects, after-school education, legal awareness initiatives, environmental programs, and livelihood training across 150 villages in Tiruvannamalai District.

Rural People's Sangam (RPS) is deeply grateful to Microsoft, the Microsoft IDC IT Asset Management Team, the TCS IT Asset Management Team, Mr. Kishore Kumar Thangavelu, Mr. Srinivasan Madheswaran, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this initiative possible. We are delighted to receive 50 laptops, which will significantly strengthen our efforts to promote digital inclusion, education, and skill development for underserved children, youth, and communities. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Dhwani Foundation team for their outstanding capacity-building training, mentorship, and continuous guidance. We humbly reach out to seek your generous support for a meaningful humanitarian initiative — providing safe, dignified, and permanent housing for 24 homeless families in Kolakaraivadi Village, Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu. About Rural People's Sangam Rural People's Sangam (RPS) is a non-profit grassroots organisation established in 1991, dedicated to uplifting marginalised and vulnerable communities in rural Tamil Nadu. Over the past 30+ years, we have worked tirelessly in the areas of housing, livelihood, women's empowerment, and child welfare — touching the lives of thousands of families across the Tiruvannamalai region. The Urgent Need: 24 Families Without Shelter In Kolakaraivadi Village, 24 families — including young children and elderly members — currently live without any permanent shelter. They endure daily hardship under plastic sheets and tarpaulin, exposed to harsh rain, scorching heat, and the constant threat of displacement. These families have no land of their own and no means to build a home independently. A home is not merely four walls — it is safety, dignity, and hope for the next generation. Project Details With support from the Selavip Foundation (UK), RPS has initiated construction of 200 sq. ft. permanent concrete homes for these families. Each house is designed to provide structural safety, weather resistance, and long-term stability. Community-Based Livestock Development

Implemented in Anandal Village, this project supported single women by providing livestock and training in animal care. More than 150 women gained stable income sources, increasing their financial stability. The program improved household resilience and ensured sustained livelihood opportunities. Capacity-building workshops helped women form collective support groups for long-term growth.

Safe Drinking Water Program

RPS implemented a safe drinking water initiative for Indigenous Irula families in Tiruvannamalai, benefiting over 560 people. The programme reduced waterborne diseases, improved hygiene, and ensured clean water availability in remote settlements. Awareness meetings, water purification support, and community-led maintenance were conducted. This initiative significantly strengthened health outcomes in vulnerable communities.

New Housing Program

This program provides climate-resilient housing for 24 Irula families in Kolakkaravadi. The initiative prioritises women-headed households and ensures safe shelter, sanitation, and long-term security. Community participation, government linkage, and technical support form the core approach. The housing project strengthens dignity, resilience, and overall well-being.

After-School Education Support Centres

RPS runs five after-school learning centres supporting 275 marginalized children. The centres focus on academic reinforcement, extracurricular learning, kitchen gardening, and social responsibility activities. Students receive tutoring, life-skills training, and mentorship, ensuring improved learning outcomes and reduced dropout rates. Parents and communities actively participate in the program.

Protection of Irula Land and Housing Rights

This ongoing program ensures Indigenous Irula families secure rightful access to government-allotted house sites. RPS provides legal guidance, advocacy support, and documentation assistance. The initiative currently supports 25 families whose houses were demolished, helping restore land rights and claim compensation. This rights-based work empowers communities with legal awareness and lasting security.
